## Description

Quick info:

 Your driver-guide collects you from your accommodation in Cape Town between 8:00 and 9:00 am. It is about a 20-minute drive to Langa, one of the city's oldest townships. Langa means "sun" in Xhosa, and the township is named after Chief Langalibalele, a respected rainmaker who was imprisoned on Robben Island. In Langa you meet a local site guide for a short walking tour of under a kilometre, with time to talk to residents along the way.

 The day:

 The walk starts at Guga S'thebe, a cultural centre where non-profit groups teach skills to young people. You then visit a former apartheid-era detention centre and a local shebeen (tavern), where you see how umqombothi beer is brewed and taste it with locals.
 Next is the municipal beer hall, then the women who run street braai (barbecue) stands, the old and new hostels that show how housing has changed, a crèche and a newer housing development.
 At the Langa market you can meet a traditional healer (sangoma) if you wish. The walking part ends at the public library.
 Back in the vehicle, your guide shows you more of Langa, then drives to Gugulethu. The name comes from the Xhosa "igugu lethu", meaning "our pride".
 Lunch is at Mzoli's, a well-known braai spot, at your own cost. You'll be back at your hotel at around 15:00.
