The Ultimate Victoria Falls Guide: The Smoke That Thunders
Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya—"The Smoke That Thunders"—Victoria Falls is a force of nature that defies description. This is where the mighty Zambezi River, over 1.7 km wide, plunges 108 meters into the Batoka Gorge, sending a plume of mist 400 meters into the sky that can be seen 50 km away.
It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But Victoria Falls is more than just a waterfall. It is the beating heart of adventure in Southern Africa. It's the perfect hub to launch a world-class safari into Botswana's Chobe National Park or Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park.
At Amity Adventure, we don't just book you a hotel. We curate a complete journey that harnesses the raw power of the Falls and connects it seamlessly to the wild soul of the African bush.
???? Victoria Falls: The Highlights
Sheer Scale: Witness the largest curtain of falling water on the planet.
Zambia vs. Zimbabwe: Experience the Falls from two different countries, each offering a unique perspective.
The Adventure Capital: Bungee jump, white water raft, gorge swing, and zipline in one of the world's most dramatic settings.
Devil's Pool: (Zambia side) Swim to the edge of the world's ultimate infinity pool during the low-water season.
The Lunar Rainbow: A rare natural phenomenon only visible on a full moon, best seen from the Zimbabwean side.
The Perfect Safari Hub: Victoria Falls is the gateway to Chobe, Hwange, and the Okavango Delta.
????? When to Go: High Water vs. Low Water
The "best" time to visit Victoria Falls is a trade-off. It all depends on the Zambezi's water levels, which dramatically change the experience.
???? High Water Season (February – June)
This is the "thunderous" season, just after the summer rains. The volume of water is staggering.
Pros: The Falls are at their most powerful and visually spectacular. The "smoke" is at its peak. The Zimbabwean side is magnificent.
Cons: The spray is so intense you can be soaked in seconds. It can be difficult to see the base of the Falls or take photos. Devil's Pool is CLOSED. White-water rafting is less dramatic ("low-run").
rocky Low Water Season (August – January)
The water levels recede, revealing the sheer rock face of the gorge.
Pros: Visibility is excellent. This is the only time Devil's Pool is OPEN (Zambia). White-water rafting is at its peak ("high-run"). You can truly appreciate the geological scale.
Cons: The Falls are less "thundering." The Zambian side (the Eastern Cataract) can dry up almost completely, becoming just a rock wall.
The Amity Adventure Expert Tip:
We love the "shoulder" months of June, July, and August. The water is still powerful enough to be awe-inspiring, but the spray is manageable, and most activities, including Devil's Pool, are beginning to open. It’s the best of both worlds.
???????? vs. ???????? Where to Go: Zambia vs. Zimbabwe?
This is the most critical decision, and we make it easy for you. Here is the definitive breakdown from our safari experts.
The Expert Verdict: You Don't Have to Choose
The KAZA Uni-Visa (when available) makes it simple to cross the border and see both sides.
Our advice: We recommend you stay on the Zimbabwean side for the classic, year-round views and the vibrant town. We will then arrange a seamless day trip to the Zambian side for you to experience Devil's Pool (in season) or a Microlight flight. You get the best of both, with none of the hassle.

???? What to Do: The Top 5 Victoria Falls Experiences
Tour the Falls (Both Sides): A non-negotiable. We arrange a guided tour on the Zimbabwean side to see the Main Falls and another on the Zambian side to walk the Knife-Edge Bridge and brave the spray.
Swim in Devil's Pool (Zambia): The world's most thrilling infinity pool. This seasonal boat trip to Livingstone Island allows you to swim in a natural rock pool right on the edge of the cascading water. This sells out months in advance. We can secure your spot.
Take the "Flight of Angels": The only way to comprehend the sheer scale of the Falls is from above. A 15-minute helicopter flight (usually from Zimbabwe) will give you the iconic photos you've dreamed of. For the brave, the microlight flight (Zambia only) is an open-air, wind-in-your-face experience.
Cruise the Upper Zambezi: A sunset "sundowner" cruise is a must-do. Relax on a luxury boat, G&T in hand, and watch for hippos, crocodiles, and elephants drinking on the riverbanks as the sun sets.
Conquer the Batoka Gorge (For Adrenaline Junkies):
White Water Rafting: Considered the best one-day rafting in the world. The rapids are biggest in the low-water season.
Bungee Jump: A 111-meter plunge from the historic Victoria Falls Bridge.
Gorge Swing & Zipline: A thrilling series of high-wire acts that have you soaring across the gorge.

???? Your Victoria Falls Safari: Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which side of Victoria Falls is better, Zambia or Zimbabwe?
The short answer: Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe side gives you the classic, panoramic view of 75% of the Falls (the Main Falls), and these viewpoints have water all year round. The town is also more compact, and many hotels are within walking distance. However, the Zambia side has the unmissable Devil's Pool. Our expert advice: Stay in Zimbabwe for the view and town, and we'll plan a day trip to the Zambian side for you to experience Devil's Pool (in season).
2. What is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?
For the "best of both worlds," we recommend June, July, or August. During this "shoulder season," the water is still very powerful, but the mist has reduced, so you can actually see the Falls. Crucially, Devil's Pool and white-water rafting are just opening for the season. If your only goal is Devil's Pool, go from September to December.
3. What is Devil's Pool and when is it open?
Devil's Pool is a natural rock pool right on the edge of the Falls on the Zambian side. You can swim and (safely) look over the 108m drop. It is a true bucket-list thrill. It is only open during the low-water season, typically from late August to late December. Access is via a boat to Livingstone Island and must be pre-booked as spots are limited. We can secure this for you.
4. Do I need a visa for Victoria Falls? What is the KAZA Uni-Visa?
Yes, you will likely need a visa for both Zimbabwe and Zambia. The best solution is the KAZA Uni-Visa. This is a single visa that, when available, allows entry into both countries for 30 days, making it perfect for seeing both sides of the Falls and doing a day trip to Chobe (Botswana). Visa rules change. As your travel expert, we will provide the most current visa advice for your nationality.
5. How many days do I need in Victoria Falls?
We recommend a minimum of three nights (two full days). This gives you one day to tour the Falls and take a helicopter flight, and a second day for a signature activity (like Devil's Pool or rafting) and a sunset cruise. If you want to combine the Falls with a safari in Chobe or Hwange, we recommend a 7 to 10-day itinerary.
6. Is Victoria Falls a good family destination?
Yes, it's fantastic for families! However, many high-adventure activities (Devil's Pool, rafting, bungee) have strict age limits (often 12 or 16+). There is still plenty to do, including guided Falls tours, sunset cruises, the Boma dinner and drum show, and wildlife safaris in nearby parks. We are family safari specialists and will design a trip with family-friendly lodges and activities that are safe and engaging for all ages.
7. What is the best way to combine Victoria Falls with a safari?
This is our specialty! Victoria Falls is the perfect hub.
Chobe (Botswana): This is the easiest and most popular combo. It's a simple 90-minute road transfer. Perfect for a 7-day "Falls & Elephants" trip.
Hwange (Zimbabwe): A 2-3 hour road transfer takes you to Zimbabwe's largest and most famous national park, known for huge elephant herds and strong predator populations.
Okavango Delta (Botswana): You can take a light aircraft flight from Kasane (near Chobe) directly into the Delta, combining all three of Southern Africa's icons into one seamless 10-14 day itinerary.
8. Is Victoria Falls safe?
Yes. Victoria Falls (on both sides) is a major tourist hub and is considered very safe. You can walk around the main tourist areas during the day. Like any tourist destination, you should take normal precautions (don't flash valuables, don't walk alone at night). All adventure activities are run by highly professional operators with excellent safety records.
9. Do I need to worry about malaria in Victoria Falls?
Yes, Victoria Falls is a malaria-risk area all year round, though the risk is highest in the wet season (Nov-Apr) and lowest in the dry winter (Jun-Aug). You must consult your doctor for the latest advice and to get anti-malarial prophylaxis. All luxury lodges provide mosquito nets and repellent.
10. How much does a Victoria Falls trip cost?
A 3-night luxury package at Victoria Falls (including a 5-star hotel, guided tour, sunset cruise, and helicopter flight) can start from ZAR 30,000 per person. A 7-day "Falls & Chobe Safari" (like our sample) will start from ZAR 68,000 to ZAR 120,000+ per person, depending on the season and level of luxury.
