Table Mountain and the city in one day

Table Mountain rises straight behind Cape Town's city centre, so it is easy to combine the mountain with the city's main sights in a single day. Here is how to plan it.

 Planning the Table Mountain visit

Table Mountain can be visited all year, but the cableway closes when it is too windy or the top is in cloud, and for a few weeks of maintenance each year. Check its status on the morning of your visit and dress in layers, as it is cooler at the top.

From 1 July 2026, a return cable car ticket costs R475 for adults bought online and R530 at the ticket office. Tickets are valid for 7 days, so if the cableway is closed you can go another day. Our city and Table Mountain tour does not include the cable car ticket, so buy it online beforehand.

 At the top

On a clear day the views take in the whole city, the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island and the mountains of the Peninsula. There are short, easy walking paths, a café and a shop. Allow an hour or two at the top.

 The city centre

After the mountain, the tour visits the centre: the Company's Garden, the Iziko South African Museum and the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest colonial building in South Africa. You'll hear about the city's history from its start as a Dutch supply station.

The tour also passes Bo-Kaap, with its brightly painted houses, and Long Street, with its cafés and shops. Try a local dish such as bobotie for lunch.

 Booking

Our half-day city and Table Mountain tour costs from $75 per person. To add the Constantia Winelands, see our private full-day city, Table Mountain and Constantia tour. For more ideas, read our other Cape Town guides.

 Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go up Table Mountain?

Early morning, when it is often clearer and less busy, or late afternoon in summer for the sunset.

Do I need to book the cable car in advance?

Yes, especially in summer. Buying online is cheaper than at the ticket office, and tickets are valid for 7 days.

Can the city tour be changed?

On a private tour, yes. Tell us what you would like to see and we will plan the day around it.
