 Cape Town's weather can change several times in one day, and a safari brings early starts and dusty roads. This list covers what our guides suggest for a trip that combines both.

 For Cape Town

 The key is layers: warm sunny days, windy afternoons and cool evenings.

 Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking shoes
 A light rain jacket, and a windproof one in summer
 A warm fleece or jumper for evenings and for the top of Table Mountain
 Sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen; the sun is strong even when it feels cool
 A swimsuit, though the Atlantic is cold all year
 A plug adapter: South Africa uses Type M, N and D sockets
 For a safari

 Binoculars, one pair each if you can
 A camera with a zoom lens, and spare batteries
 Clothes in neutral colours (khaki, green, brown) for game drives
 A warm jacket, hat and gloves for early-morning drives in winter

 Insect repellent
 The reserves near Cape Town, such as Aquila, are malaria-free. If you are going to the Kruger area, ask your doctor about malaria tablets; the risk is low but highest in the rainy summer months.

 When is the best time to visit Cape Town?

 Summer (December to February) is warm and sunny but busy and more expensive. The shoulder seasons (April to May, September to November) are milder and quieter.

 What documents and vaccinations do I need?

 Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after you leave South Africa and have at least two blank pages. You need a yellow fever certificate only if you are arriving from, or have passed through, a country with a yellow fever risk. Check with a travel clinic about other vaccinations.
