 Cape Town works well for a family holiday. Distances are short, there are beaches, penguins and an aquarium, and safaris near the city are malaria-free. Here are the activities and tours that families enjoy most.

 Family favourites

 Two Oceans Aquarium: sharks, turtles, penguins and a touch pool at the V&A Waterfront. Our aquarium entry ticket costs from $15.
 Table Mountain: the cable car ride itself is a highlight for most children. Children aged 4 to 17 pay R230 return online, and under-4s ride free.
 Kirstenbosch: lawns for picnics and the Boomslang treetop walkway at Kirstenbosch.
 Boulders Beach: boardwalks among the African penguins at Boulders, and a sheltered beach next door.
 Beaches

 Camps Bay and Clifton are beautiful but the Atlantic water is cold. For swimming with younger children, the False Bay beaches are a little warmer and calmer, such as Muizenberg and the tidal pool at St James. December to February is the warmest time for the beach.

 A safari with children

 Frequently asked questions

 When is the best time for a family trip?

 The school summer holidays (December to February) are warm and good for the beach, but busy. Winter (June to August) is wetter and cooler but quieter, with lower prices.

 Are safaris suitable for young children?

 Yes, in most cases, but some reserves have a minimum age for open-vehicle game drives. Let us know your children's ages and we'll suggest the right option.

 Can we plan our own family day?

 Yes. On a private tour you set the pace and the stops, with breaks whenever the children need them.
