Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope

 Cape Point lies at the southern end of the Cape Peninsula, about 1.5 hours' drive from Cape Town. The Cape of Good Hope, a rocky headland just to the west, was an important landmark for sailors for centuries. Both are inside the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, and a day trip there is one of the most popular things to do from Cape Town.

 What the day looks like

 Most tours leave Cape Town in the morning and follow the Atlantic coast past Clifton and Camps Bay to Hout Bay, then over Chapman's Peak Drive. In the park you visit the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, where you can walk up to the old lighthouse or ride the Flying Dutchman Funicular. The way back usually runs along False Bay, with a stop at Boulders Beach to see the African penguins.

 Wildlife and the reserve

 The Cape of Good Hope section covers about 7,750 hectares of fynbos, cliffs and beaches. You may see baboons, ostriches, eland and bontebok. Keep food out of sight: the baboons are bold and will grab bags.

 Park fees: the Cape of Good Hope fee for international adults is R515, and Boulders Beach is R245 (SANParks rates to 31 October 2026; they change each November). On most tours these are paid on the day by card.

 What to bring: comfortable shoes, sun protection and a warm layer. Cape Point is often windy, even on sunny days.

 When is the best time to visit Cape Point?

 Summer (November to March) is warm and dry but busy. Spring and autumn are quieter. Winter (June to August) can be wet and windy, but clear days in winter are very good for photographs.
