When to visit Cape Town

 Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. There is no bad time to visit, but the best time depends on what you want to do.

 Summer: November to March

 Summer is warm and dry, with long days, which makes it the best time for beaches, hiking and the Cape Peninsula. It is also the busiest and most expensive season, especially over Christmas and New Year, so book tours and the Table Mountain cableway early. The south-easterly wind can be strong in summer and sometimes closes the cableway.

 Spring and autumn: September to October and April to May

 These months are mild and quieter. They are good for sightseeing and hiking, and spring brings wildflowers to the West Coast.

 Winter: June to August

 Winter brings rain and cooler days, but also clear, bright days between cold fronts, fewer visitors and lower prices. It is a good time for indoor sights such as museums and wine tastings.

 Safaris

 The reserves near Cape Town are in the Karoo, which stays fairly dry all year. From May to September the bush is thin, so animals are easier to spot, and the days are cool. In summer it gets very hot in the Karoo, so game drives start early. Our Aquila day safari runs all year.

 Whale watching

 Southern right whales come to the Cape coast to mate and calve, usually from June to November. Hermanus is the best-known place to see them. Our Hermanus boat trip costs from $170 with transfers from Cape Town.

 Other activities

 For hiking, spring and autumn are the most comfortable, with mild weather and quieter trails. For surfing, the Atlantic is cold all year, and False Bay beaches such as Muizenberg are a little warmer.
