Choosing a day tour in Cape Town

Cape Town sits between Table Mountain and the Atlantic, and most of its best-known sights are within a day's drive. For a first visit the choice can feel overwhelming, so here are the day tours we recommend most often, with what each one covers and what it costs.

 The main day tours

Cape Peninsula and Cape Point: Chapman's Peak Drive, the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach. Our small-group tour costs from $58, or from $130 privately.
Table Mountain and the city: the cable car up Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap and the historic centre. Our half-day city tour costs from $75; cable car tickets are extra.
The Winelands: tastings at wine estates in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Our small-group Winelands tour costs from $82, including tastings and lunch.
Townships: Langa and Khayelitsha, with local guides who explain their history and daily life. Our shared township tour costs from $58.
Whale watching: boat trips from Hermanus to see southern right whales, usually from June to November. Our Hermanus whale watching trip costs from $170 with transfers.
 Practical tips

Cost: our Cape Town day tours start at about $42 for a small-group trip, and private tours start at about $124 per person.
Length: most full-day tours take 8 to 10 hours; half-day tours take about 4 to 5 hours.
What to wear: comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and a warm layer. The weather can change quickly, especially near the coast and on the mountain.
Entrance fees: check what is included. On many tours, park fees for the Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Beach are paid on the day.
 Booking

You can book any of these online or ask us to combine several into a few days. See all our Cape Town tours. For more planning help, read our other Cape Town guides, such as our comparison of private and group tours.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, especially from December to January, when tours and the Table Mountain cableway are at their busiest.

 Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, on a private tour you choose the stops and the pace. Group tours follow a fixed route.
